Soft gear is any type of fishing gear that will need to drip dry and/or dry out when you get home to avoid getting moldy. Soft gear can include:
- Kayak seats
- Life jackets
- Wading belts
- Waders
- Paddle leashes
- Ropes/lines/tie-down straps
- Neoprene boots
When I get home from fishing, I wash all of my gear with fresh water. If possible, I’ll let it dry in the sun for a while, but sometimes it will still be damp when it’s time to bring it into the garage.
I used to get frustrated by not having enough places to hang soft gear so that it can fully dry. Then I decided to try this method:

It’s a cheap wooden coat rack that I bought off Amazon, and its where I permanently store most of my soft gear. If keeps my gear off of the floor, and allows it to dry completely between trips.
I have four kayaks, and this rack is obviously very good at keeping my seats and life jackets in one place, but it can work for any of the items on the above list. If you are looking for an easy solution to store your soft gear, give this a try.
Have a reel good day,
