Velcro Use On Fishing Gear

Velcro on fishing gear is generally annoying. Here is a list of fishing gear that sometimes includes Velcro:

  • Velcro attachment for wader suspenders
  • Velcro closure on wadefishing belts
  • Velcro closure on wadefishing tackle box pouch
  • Velcro tensioner on stringray guards
  • Velcro zipper holder on neoprene boots
  • Velcro tensioner on fishing gloves
  • Velcro tensioner on the back of cap
  • Velcro keeper on wadefishing belt tool holder
  • Velcro closure on kayak paddle leash

I don’t like Velcro it because it starts off great (nice and sticky) but over time deteriorates and becomes almost useless. In addition, it can fill up with sand and sediment and become less effective. Low-stress/low-tension uses of Velcro are somewhat acceptable, but high-tension uses (like a wading belt closure) are not acceptable in my opinion.

So what is better than Velcro? A secure attachment device, like these plastic buckles seen on my waders, are a better option:

So is this plastic buckle on my very old wadefishing belt.

I have used my wadefishing belt since I was about 15, and now I am in my 40’s. I have refused to buy a new one, because there aren’t many great choices, and some of the popular choices use Velcro.

Anyway, my recommendation is to avoid Velcro when you can.

Have a reel good day,
